The South African Museum, known as ‘Iziko’, situated in 25 Queen Victoria Street, Cape Town is the oldest and largest museum on the sub-continent.
From their website:
‘Iziko’ is an isiXhosa word, meaning “a hearth”. Since the hearth of a typical African hut usually occupies the central space, Iziko symbolises both a hub of cultural activity, and a central place for gathering together South Africa’s diverse heritage’
For February and continuing to the 12th of March, Iziko hosts the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition.
From the website:
“The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is an international showcase for the very best photography featuring natural subjects. The Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is owned by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine, two UK institutions that pride themselves on revealing and championing the diversity of life on Earth. The exhibition, brought to South Africa by NHU AFRICA, is sponsored by Animal Planet.
Wildlife photographers worldwide aspire to be placed in this competition. Each year thousands of entries are received and judged by a specially selected expert panel. Professionals win many of the prizes, but amateurs succeed too. Achieving the perfect picture is down to a mixture of skill, vision, originality, knowledge of nature and luck.
From vivid, colourful landscapes, to intimate portraits of animal behaviour, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition offers an extraordinary insight into the beauty, drama and diversity of the natural world.”
Iziko is Open 10:00 – 17:00 daily. Adults: R10.00. Children: R5.00. Seniors and students on production of valid card: R5.00. Free entrance on Saturdays.
It’s an aspiring experience.

My favorite is the Iceberg.
So how does an iceberg qualify as “wildlife”? Surely that would be a landscape.
Hi Guy, the iceberg qualifies because it is a natural subject in the category ‘Wild Places’. “Wildlife”, in this instance, has a broad definition. Which one is your favorite?
Ja, the iceberg one is amazing. Also love the forest one, and of course the shark, and the elephant. And the bear. And the zebra…
Hell, I have to get myself to that exhibition!
Personally Jumbo having a dip is my favourite. See that is wildlife, but the colour of the water bothers me, that looks domesticated.
You are an amazing photographer. And I agree I think the iceberg is part of wildlife. My personal favorite is the elephant but the angle on the Zebras is beautiful…
