Redbull 360° Interactive Video

Redbull’s new surfing site features an impressive application of interactive video technology. The video lets you click and scroll within the video, giving you 360-degree control of video footage, placing you atop a surfboard on the waves of Tahiti’s notorious Teahupoo surf break.

[You can view more videos here]I used this example in the recent Filmmakers Unconference pointing to the association between the RedBull brand and interactive entertainment. Just like the video seamlessly blends visual data, it also seamlessly blends Redbull marketing with entertainment.

RedBull obviously has a very impressive budget judging by the complexity of the camera specifications. According to partner TAOW Productions, the 360-degree spherical video camera captures eleven separate video streams, which are then “arranged according to geodesic geometry” to create a complete spherical image; a high-resolution 360 degree view of surroundings that is seamlessly stitched together.

Developed by Immersive Media Corp. (IMC), the technology is also used by Google for its Street View mapping feature.

Branded entertainment at its best.

[I picked this up by Uwe Gutshow's excellent blog. He also references Rick Mathieson, where the technical info comes from.]
